The Nature of Time– Excerpt from Twice Born

“Can you hop into the past?” I asked.

Sapphire said, “Oh yes. We do, constantly.”

You see, Thomas, for you, for your sanity, you think time runs in a straight line in one direction, from what you call the past to what you call the future. For us, past, present and future are all here now. We flit between them all day.”

“What’s that like?”

She paused awhile, perhaps trying to find words I would understand. She said, “You sometimes trip in time without knowing.”

“Really?”

“Have you ever walked into a room to get something and then forgotten what you came there for?”

“All the time.”

“When you enter the new room, you forget why you were there because you actually flipped back to a time when you had not yet thought of the reason for going there.”

“Er…”

“Have you ever forgotten whether you put sugar in your tea and added more, just in case. Then you taste the tea and find it is too sweet?”

“Well, yes.”

“It is the same thing. You circled back in time to when you had not yet sugared your tea, so you dropped some in. When you returned to your present, you had two lots of sugar.”

“I see.” I didn’t.

“Do you ever have déjà vu when you think you have been here and done this before?”

“Oh yes.”

“Well you have. Some while ago, you must have meandered forward to that time and place, and you did whatever you did in that future time. You saw who you saw. You said what you said. Then you wandered back in time to your present when that event had not yet happened. You then had to live second by second, hour by hour until you reached the time of the future event you had already experienced and that is when you thought ‘This has happened before.’

“Sapphire, forgive me but, I’m finding it hard to keep up.”

“You are supposed to find it hard, to protect you from concepts you are not equipped to understand.”

“I understand.” I didn’t.

“Remember, Thomas, we are Spirits of the Universe. We exist beyond worlds, dimensions and times, so for us, it is easy to slide between them. You were created for this world, this dimension.”

“Your bodies are complex physical communities with millions of microscopic life forms, all locked up in a thin boundary of human skin. Your existence and your sanity is dependent upon the illusion of bounded space and time as it manifests in this dimension. Without those boundaries, your dream of yourself as a separate entity, and your actual existence as a person, would evaporate and merge into everything.”

“So, will we ever be able to travel in time or to parallel dimensions?” I asked.

“Not within your bodies.”

“Outside our bodies?”

“The only way out of your physical bonds is by waking from your dream.”

“Death?” I asked.

“Yes, or transcendence to the One,” she said.

“Will you show me?” I asked.

“I will. Before you leave the Earth,” she said.
